Bipolar Disorder Books

Bipolar disorder, once known as manic-depression, is a psychiatric diagnosis referring to a mental health condition defined by periods of extreme, often inappropriate, and sometimes unpredictable mood states.

Bipolar individuals generally experience mania, hypomania or mixed states alternating with clinical depression and euthymic or normal range of mood over varied periods of time. There are many variations of this disorder. A person with bipolar disorder generally tends to experience more extreme states of mood than other people. Moods can change quickly (many times a day) or last for months. Bipolar individuals tend to have very 'black and white' thinking, where everything in life is either a positive aspect or a negative. Mood patterns of this nature are associated with distress and disruption, and a relatively high risk of suicide. Bipolar disorder is also associated with a variety of cognitive deficits, in particular, difficulty in organizing and planning. The disorder may also skew the ability to judge others' emotion, and alter sense of awareness. paranoid.

Bipolar disorder is usually treated with medications and/or therapy or counselling.

As well as being linked to disability, studies have suggested a correlation between creativity and bipolar disorder, although it is unclear what the relationship is between the two. Studies have also indicated increased striving for, and sometimes obtaining, goals and achievements more generally; in other words, many with bipolar disorder tend to be more driven, extremely goal oriented, and hard working.

Performing Songwriter Magazine

Performing Songwriter

by Larry Dobrow, Tuesday, March 27, 2007
IN A RARE DEPARTURE from my glued-to-the-couch routine, I hit the town two nights in a row last week, both times to catch singer/songwriter types at smallish clubs. Each evening, I downed precisely three pints of beer and stayed out until -- get this -- 12:05 a.m. Spring break, baby! Yeah!

During the second night, it dawned on me that every song being performed chronicled a romantic relationship in some advanced state of decay. I realize that personal despair often births sublime art (see under "Tracks, Blood on the"), but gosh, does every single refrain have to be such a downer? Enough with the woe-is-me-and-you already. So I broke out the Takamine on Saturday morning to embark on my new career as a well-adjusted, sensitive singer/songwriter -- just like James Blunt, minus the menacing sarcasm. Among the songs that spilled out of my soul during that emotional session were "You're Really Super!," "Having Relations With You Is Nothing Like That Time When I Slammed My Hand in the Car Door," and "(I Am) Emotionally Available."

What I learned: writing songs is hard. Which is why I wonder about the utility of Performing Songwriter as anything other than a quickie read for music fans, whether or not they're currently attempting to melodize their sophomore-year poetry.

As a broadly targeted music magazine, it works just dandy, what with its linear approach (Q&As aplenty) and easy design. But as a guide for would-be Carole Kings, the March/April Performing Songwriter offers precious little illumination on what distinguishes a good song from a great one. Songwriting, it seems, isn't easily taught or explained.

The chat with Jimmy Webb ("Wichita Linesman") comes as close as the mag gets to an in-depth exploration of the songwriting process, but it feels rushed at a mere two-plus pages in length. Similarly, the piece on Adam Schlesinger, one of the two primary Fountains of Wayne scribes, does a better job of outlining inter-band dynamics than it does capturing what it takes to write hyper-catchy pop songs.

Performing Songwriter sags when it follows the generic-music-mag script. The "New Release Spotlight" casts its warm glow on the same three artists featured in every other publication (not to mention the Sunday Best Buy circular) this week, while the reviews are flush with the type of phrasing that simply doesn't exist outside the world of music criticism ("even when he sings, his words serve not as narration but as tools to craft an overall feeling"). And like so many March/April issues before it, Performing Songwriter toes the on-second-thought-Yoko-Ono-really-doesn't-sound-like-a-grieving-rhino line. The mag gets bonus see-you-in-hell points for presenting a cleavage shot alongside her ramblings.

What I like very much about Performing Songwriter is content from the mag's vault, presented as part of its 100th-issue victory lap. Nearly every bit of the old stuff, whether story-behind-the-story quips about Elvis Costello and Martin Short or photos (Jack Nicholson with The Monkees! John Wayne and Bob Hope with America!) from the archives of lensman Henry Diltz, pulses with energy. Its vitality, in fact, contrasts sharply with the "fresh" material, suggesting that the title's best days could be behind it.

The issue could go a little lighter on the self-congratulations. The editor's note, for example, recollects how an investor told her that "this magazine was too important to let money stop it" (funny, the other day I heard some guy on the tee vee saying the same thing about universal health care). A quick "mazel tovs all around" would've sufficed.

Maybe I'm at fault here, as I grabbed Performing Songwriter expecting more in the way of process-oriented content. That said, magazines that don't deliver what they promise tend to disappoint readers, and disappointed readers tend to take out their frustration by, you know, reading something else. Anybody truly interested in honing his or her songcraft should just grab a copy of a record by one of the underappreciated greats -- say, Freedy Johnston's "Blue Days Black Nights" -- and learn by listenin'.

Pharmacy Cure for Book Search Anxiety

BibliOZ Pharmacy Cure for Book Search Anxiety

BibliOZ.com launches its specialist booksearch service for the pharmaceutical-related professions. Book researchers receive discounts, personalized customer service and other benefits by entering a special registration access code.

Sydney, Australia (PRWeb) 11 March, 2007 -- A service offered by BibliOZ The Book Search Wizard for finding out-of-print, collectible and hard-to-find books has been launched specifically for professionals in the pharmaceutical industry.

Developed by BiblioQuest International, the portal page gives pharmacy professionals, researchers and support staff privileged access to the online search engine, BibliOZ The Book Search Wizard featuring more than 40 million books from thousands of technical, antiquarian and specialist bookdealers worldwide.

Each year BiblioQuest International receives millions of online queries through its booksearch engine and thousands of telephone inquiries through its customer service centre.

BiblioQuest Director, Paul McShane says that the growth in pharmaceutical research in everything from the obesity epidemic to herbal and alternative medicines has fueled the need for a professional-level booksearch service in that sector.

"Ironically, the output from pharmaceutical and related academic research has even made an impact on the general bestseller lists here in Australia, where one of the biggest titles in recent years was the CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet" he said.

"Who would have thought a book published from research out of the government-funded Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) would be able to knock Harry Potter and The Da Vinci Code off the top of the bestseller lists?"

"As a BibliOZ.com Preferred Professional Client within the pharmaceutical industry, the customer is automatically given discounts of at least 10 percent on all purchases."

"Preferred Professional Clients can also access a vast topic menu and also gains selective access to a general library of bibliographies of out-of-print, collectible and technical books, monographs, periodicals and charts," he said.

"Aside from this special access to the BibliOZ.com online service, Preferred Professional Clients can instead opt to use BiblioQuest's telephone customer service centre," concluded McShane.

The portal page at BibliOZ Pharmacy Book Search has an access code to register as a Preferred Professional Client as well as more information on the benefits of using the BibliOZ.com service and sample searches related to the pharmaceutical sector.

Preferred Professional Clients can also make use of the BibliOZ.com website to find books other than technical and professional texts, and it is a great resource for any reader, hobbyist, sporting fan or the like. BibliOZ.com also offers search capabilities in other professional areas related to pharmacy practice such as management, human resources and finance.

BibliOZ features tens of thousands of items that have a keyword reference to pharmaceutical topics, ranging from books valued at thousands of dollars -- such as the Universal Herbal an early 19th century botanical, medical and agricultural dictionary -- to introductory pharmacy textbooks like the The Latin Grammar of Pharmacy often costing less than $10.

About BiblioQuest
Established in 1994, BiblioQuest is headquartered in Australia and has a customer base that numbers in the tens of thousands.

The BibliOZ,com Book Search Wizard website was launched in early 2001 and provides the online out-of-print service for major book chains and dozens of independent bookstores.

The portal page to enable pharmacy professionals to register as BibliOZ.com Preferred Clients can be found at BibliOZ Pharmacy Book Search

Jonathan Newell, Editor, writes:

Security of mobile devices has hit the headlines again recently with
two high profile incidents of laptops being deftly extracted from
their owners who just happened to have loaded personal data records
onto them. In the case of the Nationwide Building Society, it was 11
million customer records for which they paid heavily through the
courts. More recently, Worcestershire city council lost a laptop
containing the data of 18000 council staff. PGP comments that lifting
a laptop is the easiest way to compromise the information protection
policy of any organisation. Of course, it doesn't stop there - having
your data carried around in someone's briefcase or shirt pocket in the
case of PDA's and flash devices is asking for trouble unless that data
is comprehensively protected. Sadly it seems that in many cases it
isn't. We have to admit that banks and government organisations are
usually pretty good at this sort of protection so if they're getting
it wrong, imagine the chaotic mess everyone else is in.

There are a growing number of companies in existence which can help
out with this problem with their security products for mobile devices
which include anything outside of the firewall - laptops, PDA's and
flash memory included. We cover their news on the website and you can
read more about PGP's comments by clicking through from the link in
the newsletter below.

It may also be worth visiting InfoSecurity Europe in April where this
issue is certain to be high on the agenda. The conference takes place
between the 24th and 26th of April in London and you can read more
about their exhibitors on their page of our web site.

I hope you find this issue of our newsletter useful. In addition to
the new products, news and ideas featured here, there are hundreds
more on our website and dozens more being added daily, so do take a
look if you can.

Alternatively, the full stories behind all the summaries and headlines
in this newsletter can be retrieved by email alone: see

[2] INTELLIGENT VIDEO SURVEILLANCE FOR BARCELONA METRO
(Sony Europe, ISS Division, 19 Feb 2007)

Line 9 (L-9) of the Barcelona Underground is implementing a Sony
intelligent video surveillance solution to guarantee safety and
operating efficiency across its network.  The solution features an
integrated networked video surveillance system built on the innovative
DEPA (Distributed Enhanced Processing Architecture) platform, which
includes Sony's award-winning IP monitoring software RealShot Manager
and 1,585 IP cameras deployed in the 51 stations along the line.  From
Santa Coloma de Gramanet, at the north end of the city limits, to the
airport of El Prat, at the southern end, the L-9 line serves some of
the busiest areas of Barcelona.  It crosses the important Carlos
III-Ronda del Mig-Travessera de Dalt-Sagrera axis, servicing areas
critical to Barcelona's thriving economy such as the Logistics
Activities Area (ZAL) in the port and the Zona Franca (duty-free
zone).  The network links five municipalities, and is scheduled to
carry some 90 million passengers a year.  The project required a
robust security and monitoring system to guarantee users' safety and
security at all times.  The complexity of the project was heightened
by the multitude of installations, high number of stations - in some
cases 60 metres below street level, and numerous stretches of line,
stairs, escalators and corridors.  The real challenge lay in deploying
a sophisticated control system combining efficiency and intelligence.

[3] BLAST WINDOW RETENTION ANCHOR SYSTEMS
(Cintec, 19 Feb 2007)

Cintec America of Baltimore, MD, a world leader in the field of
structural masonry retrofit strengthening, repair, and preservation,
offers its Blast Window Retention Anchor Systems.  Cintec's Blast
Window Retention Anchor Systems offer a customised solution for each
application and masonry substrate to provide maximum resistance to
explosions.  The award-winning Blast Window Retention Anchor System
process begins with an inspection of the structure by qualified
personnel.  The structure is then modelled to assess the most likely
response and the risk inherent to the structure in order to determine
the best reinforcement pattern.  At the site, the Cintec Blast Window
Retention Anchor System, fashioned out of a steel bar enclosed in a
mesh fabric sleeve, are inserted into the masonry and then connected
to the frames.  A specially-developed, non-polymer, cementitious grout
is then injected into the sleeve under low pressure.  The grout then
fuses with the mesh, expands, and shapes itself around the steel to
fit the space.  Cintec uses state-of-the-art dry or low-volume wet
diamond drilling techniques to reduce or even eliminate water damage
associated with conventional concrete wet drilling.  Extensive in-situ
load testing on various sizes and types of Cintec Blast Window
Retention Anchor Systems has proven that large blast loads can be
successfully resisted, while providing a reliable, secure and
fool-proof fixing in all types of masonry substrate

[4] FALSE ALARM REDUCTION TO MOTOR DEALERSHIPS
(Optex (Europe), 22 Feb 2007)

One of the oldest and most well-respected motor dealerships is using
innovative external Redwave detection technology from Optex Europe,
specified and installed by local specialists Reay Security, to protect
a number of its trading sites throughout the north east.  In keeping
with many such establishments, the need to protect vehicles overnight
from damage or theft is paramount.  Being outside, however, there are
issues with wildlife, adverse weather conditions, advertising bunting
etc triggering alarms which are by definition 'false', and potentially
therefore impacting on police response.  Keeping false alarms to a
minimum, whilst being sure that 'real' intruders are detected, was the
task given to Reay Security, who in turn recommended Optex Europe's
Redwave Detectors.  Redwave detectors have been designed specifically
to counter the three major headaches for installers, remote monitoring
centres, and end-users associated with false alarms in outdoor
detection: repetitive movement - ie from objects such as trees, flags,
advertising bunting etc; small animals - from foxes and other mammals
to insects flying in front of the detector; and 'over-ranging' -
alarms triggered by activity (eg from passing vehicles) beyond the
perimeter being protected.  In addition to using passive infrared
(PIR) and microwave technology as in conventional combination
detectors, Redwave also has Adjustable Microwave Range Limiter (AMRL)
technology that allows users to adjust the detection distance, and a
Dual Quad Zone Logic (DQZL) PIR that uses two PIR detectors to
increase detection density and eliminate undetectable areas.

[5] AVOID COMPLICATING CARD CRIME PREVENTION
(The 3rd Man, 26 Feb 2007)

The announcement by APACS that it is working with banks, retailers,
trade associations and others to trial next generation fraud
prevention solutions to combat 'card not present' fraudulent
transactions is another step in the fight against retail crime, but
fraud protection specialist the 3rd Man believes that the industry is
in danger of over-complicating systems and alienating genuine
customers.  Proposed new solutions include a cardholder inserting
their chip and PIN card into a hand-held card reader and entering
their PIN, as they would do in a store.  On confirming the PIN
entered, the reader generates a unique, one-time only passcode which
the cardholder provides, when prompted, for authentication with the
cardholder's bank.  This solution, says APACS, will ensure that the
person conducting business online or over the phone is the genuine
customer and will make these types of transaction even safer.

[6] POOR CONFIDENCE IN WEB SECURITY PREVAILS
(Symantec, 23 Feb 2007)

The UK's online economy is in danger of stagnating if businesses don't
instil more confidence in their customers, according to research
released by Symantec.  The study revealed that 66 per cent of
consumers believe that making transactions online puts them at
increased risk of online fraud, and 30 per cent agree that Internet
security threats prevent them from making more online transactions.
The survey, carried out amongst 2,500 UK adults, has revealed that
despite three-quarters of the population shopping and banking online,
many are looking for additional reassurances from online retailers
before spending more.  While most respondents (45 per cent) have no
plans to spend any more than their current online average of around
GBP100 a month over the next year, and 48 per cent of shoppers still
prefer to shop on the high street, the results suggest that online
business isn't as booming as it could be.  However, if businesses
guaranteed that they would compensate their customers should their
money or identity be stolen, then 77 per cent of those questioned
would be more encouraged to spend online.

[7] THAMES VALLEY TO USE SIEMENS CCTV
(Siemens Building Technologies, 26 Feb 2007)

Siemens Building Technologies, Security Systems has entered into a
Framework Agreement with the Thames Valley Police for the supply of
Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and CCTV cameras, for a
period of three years.  This is the first contract of this type and
represents a new method of working for both parties.  Thames Valley
Police and its partners throughout the UK can now take advantage of
special fixed pricing, negotiated under a strict tendering process.
This allows them to call off equipment and services at short notice,
at the same time taking advantage of pre-negotiated rates.  Siemens
was selected to fulfil this contract not just for their keen pricing,
but also because of its considerable experience supplying equipment
and services to this sector.  Automatic number plate recognition
(ANPR) is helping police forces tackle criminality on the roads.  It
is an invaluable tool in promoting public assurance that crime is
being systematically reduced.  ANPR systems read, record, log and
check number plates against a database.  If recognised as significant
or suspicious, the system can alert users to take the appropriate
action.  Siemens has developed a more sophisticated ANPR system, based
on its considerable understanding of the security requirements of both
the public and private sectors.  The system will automatically check
the number plates of moving or stationery vehicles against the PNC,
DVLA or local databases and is capable of rapidly deploying accurate,
timed information of stolen or untaxed vehicles, known criminals or
suspects' vehicles.

company - Response 24, Alert 24 and Alarm 24.  Response 24 provides
round the clock premises monitoring throughout the year by
Dyno-Secure's Alarm Receiving Centre.  Two service visits are also
included as well as 24 hour customer care and service support.  The
Alert 24 has a speech dialler incorporated within the control box.  If
the alarm is triggered, the alarm calls up to four programmed
telephone numbers including mobiles informing the home owner,
nominated friends or family that the alarm has been set off.  The
Alarm 24 is a bells only system designed to deter burglars and inform
neighbours when the alarm is activated.

Chris Rand, Editor, writes:

I have absolutely no statistics to support this, but I just have a
feeling that engineers are disproportionately represented in the
fields of toolshed owning, railway enthusiasm and stamp collecting.
Tick me off for at least one. So I have no hesitation in drawing
attention to the fact that today sees the launch of a really nice set
of stamps from the Royal Mail here in the UK on the theme of
innovation. Stamps are big business, and have therefore rather
predictably been undervalued by some shameless opportunism in recent
years; even now some Pacific island is probably printing off a
commemorative set of stamps depicting this year's Celebrity Big
Brother contestants. However, the new Royal Mail ones are great.

Based on the theme of innovation, the six stamps depict the work of
five influential British engineers and inventors (a rather silly sixth
stamp is supposed to represent space tourism: do I detect the
influence of Sir Richard Branson again?). The illustrations are by
Peter Till, whose style you probably either love or hate (I love it)
and show the work of Thomas Telford, George Stephenson, Alexander
Graham Bell, John Logie Baird and Tim Berners-Lee. The theme
immediately struck me as being "transport and communication" rather
than "innovation", but what do I know? Take a look:

[1] STANDARD AC DRIVES ENTER SERVO PERFORMANCE ARENA
(ABB Automation Tech (Drives and Motors), 26 Feb 2007)

ABB has designed a new drive which it claims is "the most adaptable in
the market", allowing control of synchronous or asynchronous motors,
either open loop or closed loop. Rated from 0.75 to 45kW, it uses
standard AC drive technology but with significant performance
improvements including DTC (direct torque control) which features a
very fast torque control loop, taking it into the pure servo drive
arena where torque control loops of between 62.5 to 250us are
achieved. The drive is targeted at machinery builders and will open up
new applications for ABB such as smaller processing line drives for
rubber and plastics machines.

[2] PRECISION GEAR SETS CLAIMED AS WORLD'S SMALLEST
(Harmonic Drive UK, 26 Feb 2007)

Harmonic Drive has introduced what it says are the world's smallest
backlash-free precision gear sets. The Micro Harmonic Drive gear
components typically measure less than 8.0mm in diameter, with an
axial length of under 1.0mm and a tooth module of just 34 microns, yet
when supplied as part of a miniaturised gearbox or actuator can
provide high reduction ratios, plus exceptional acceleration,
repeatability and torque with low moments of inertia.  The gear sets
are based on proven Harmonic Drive technology, with a conventional
assembly of a wave generator, Flexspline and circular spline, but the
wave generator now comprises a sun gear, which is normally connected
to a motor shaft, with two elastically deformable planetary gears
being used to transmit motion from the motor shaft to the Flexspline
and the circular spline. Additionally, it is also possible to
incorporate a dynamic spline as an output element when the gear set is
used as a speed reducer.

[3] MODELLING TOOL SUITS CAD APPLICATIONS
(Adept Scientific, 28 Feb 2007)

TurboCAD Professional 12 delivers many significant improvements over
earlier versions of the well-known PC CAD software. Improvements in
rendering and the new support of LightWorks Archives result in better
visualisation capabilities, and new, adjustable tool palettes,
context-sensitive tools and intuitive work flow should combine to
increase productivity. TurboCAD Professional 12 uses the latest Open
Drawing Alliance file libraries, allowing users access to over 30 of
the most popular industry standard file formats, including AutoCAD's
DWG and DXF, DesignCAD's DCD, MicroStation DGN, 3DS, IGES,
STEP and STL.  A newly added feature also supports the import
and export of 3D files to and from DWF format.

[4] DEPENDABLE AND RUGGED DESIGN FOR ANGLE SENSOR
(ASM, 27 Feb 2007)

ASM is claiming "a new benchmark" for angular position sensors with
the development of a magnetic angle sensor in a very compact M12
housing.  The PRAS1 sensor provides absolute position measurement over
a full 360-degree sensing range and with only a 0.5in diameter and
overall length of less than 2in, it can be installed in tight
locations. Contact-free and wear-free angular measurement is achieved
by using a position magnet.

[5] NUT OFFERS FAST AND RELIABLE FASTENING
(Profil UK, 26 Feb 2007)

The new URNA general-purpose clinch fastener nut from Profil UK offers
a fast and reliable method of mounting M6 steel threads in sheet metal
components up to 1.9 mm thick. It should be cost-effective for many
applications requiring good dynamic, static and impact load
performance in light gauge materials. Featuring a universal
rectangular nut with a circular cross section shank, the rivet
fastener achieves push out, torque and shear load capabilities
superior to traditional pierce or rivet nuts, but at a significantly
lower cost.

[6] VALVES REDUCE STROKE VOLUME
(Asco Joucomatic Numatics, 27 Feb 2007)

Asco Joucomatic Numatics has launched a 33mm version of its highly
successful type 353/800 Power Pulse valves. Specifically designed for
the dust collector market, the valves feature a patented piston design
that enables significantly faster opening and closing times, quieter
operation and lower operating costs. Power Pulse valves are very
compact and the option of a remote pilot makes them even more
attractive for applications where space is at a premium. Remote pilots
can be mounted individually or supplied in boxes, operating from two
to twelve valves and having the benefits of a common inlet and
exhaust.

[7] INCREASED LOAD CARRYING WITHOUT EXTRA DESIGN SPACE
(HepcoMotion, 27 Feb 2007)

The HepcoMotion UtiliTrak is claimed to be not only a better quality
linear guideway system than its predecessor, but also easier to
install. Higher precision has been achieved by the replacement of the
original composite rail with a one-piece carbon steel rail that is
both hardened and ground to provide the internal vee running surface.
Available ex-stock, UtiliTrak is offered in two series: the SW series
has steel carriage wheels running on a hardened bearing steel rails
and is designed for loads up to 16,800N at speeds of up to 8m/s with
acceleration to 5G; for lighter duty applications where smooth running
is not so critical, there's the PW series with chemical-resistant,
polymer wheels over-moulded on a stainless steel bearing running on an
anodised aluminium rail.
